Paisley scrunched her nose in thought for a moment and then turned her cherubic cheeks to me. “I love you, Mommy. Can I have a kiss?”
Dawson choked on a laugh and reached to cover his mouth with a napkin.
“Of course.” I leaned in to kiss her cheek, and she beamed.
“What about me?” Kody asked.
“Can’t forget you.” I strolled around the table and bent to place a kiss on my boy’s cheek too.
“Don’t forget Sophia,” Kody said.
“Never. This baby needs all the kisses.” I moseyed between Sophia and Dawson and laid several smooches on her scrumptious cheeks, to which she laughed, filling the room with delightful sound and pleasure that the other kids echoed.
“And Dawson,” Paisley shouted. “Dawson’s turn!”
I stiffened. The lighthearted mood instantly pulled as tight as a rubber band about to snap.
“Oh—I—” My gaze drifted to grapple with Dawson’s.
The embarrassment I expected wasn’t there. Instead, his eyes twinkled. He held my gaze for only seconds, but it seemed a lot longer than that before he pulled away and peered at Paisley.
“You think your mama should give me a kiss?”
The kids’ shouts overwhelmed my protest. “Yeah!” they chimed. Paisley raised her hands and Sophia copied, placing her little palms on her head.
I was out of my element. My mind was completely blank. I wished I could think of something witty, a funny comeback to say to get myself out of this predicament.
“Go ahead,” Dawson said, lifting his fork to his lips. “I don’t bite.”
“You just did,” Kody said with a laugh, pointing to the barely touched pork chop on his plate.
Dawson grinned and pushed his plate away from him. “Well, I won’t bite you, anyway. Lay one on me.” He tapped the apple of his cheek and smirked.
My heart started pounding. Dawson was beyond gorgeous. Since I was now officially divorced, there were no legal barriers in place. Besides, it was just a peck on the cheek, wasn’t it?
I could walk away from this. Laugh it off and let it go, but the kids wouldn’t understand, and frankly, Dawson didn’t seem to mind. He acted like it was all a joke.
Mustering my courage, I wove in close and bent near his side. He smelled so good, freshly showered with his hair still damp. I inhaled the piney smell of his soap and took in the softness of the growth along his jaw. He glanced at me and raised a single brow, tilted his cheek in my direction. I moved in, breathing him in.
And then, just as I placed my lips on his cheek, he turned his head and offered his lips instead.
